Harry Houdini was born in Budapest, but claimed to be an American born in Appleton, Wisconsin. Did the US government come into conflict with Houdini over immigration/citizenship issues? Did everyone believe Houdini was American? Was immigration so lax that lack of citizenship wasn't a problem?
