What evolutionary benefit is there for bacteria, viruses, parasites etc. to cause bad symptoms or death within it's host? Wouldn't it be more beneficial to have good symptoms, or none at all?

Would a civilisation on a far away planet be able to detect the light emitted by humans from cities and other artificial light sources on the dark side of the Earth, or would it be too dim to pick up on? Assuming the civilisation had the same level of technology as we do.
