Garbed as princes, early Indian sojourners to Britain (e.g. Mirza Abu Taleb Isfahani, Mirza I'tisam ud-Din) were given great respect by the British aristocracy. Yet more than a half-century later, this courtesy has vanished: Sir Syed in 1869 is met with contempt and scrutiny. What explains this?

When Asian manuscripts (stolen, bought or looted) were being routinely procured by covetous European libraries and collectors, did any voice of opposition rise among Orientalists? Further, has there been any campaign by modern Western scholars to restore these manuscripts to their rightful lands?
