I was listening to a Frank Herbert interview recently, and he said that many of the modern religions emerged or evolved in desert settings. Is this true? And if so, what are some of the reasons that is?

Do we know more about ancient history than pre-modern history? Would medieval scholars, closer in time to civilizations like ancient Mesopotamia, have access to records since destroyed, that provide more insight than we would have?
