George Washington died on December 14, 1799. If I am a poor farmer in Georgia at that time, how long would it take for me to learn about Washington’s death and in what ways did this news move through the country?

My grandfather, who fought for the US in WWII, told his family that he was on Mt. Vesuvius during its eruption and was saved by Italian soldiers who picked him up and drove him to safety. Are there accounts of this happening to Americans or is it likely a fictional account of his experience?

What was the process of rebuilding Hiroshima and Nagasaki like after the atomic bombs? Were the Japanese aware of the long term effects (radiation) of such an attack when rebuilding?
