My car feels heavy to accelerate but after some time, the car jolts forward as it catches pace. Why is this? I didnt push the pedal more.

Im driving at a constant speed lets say 30mph,constant speed. Car feels heavy and suddenly without any more weight on the pedal, the car launches forward and catches speed. Why is this?
