In 843 a group of Norse pirates took the island of Noirmoutier on the coast of France. Another in 858 on the island of Oissel (in seine upstream from Rouen). Oissel held against an attack from Charles the Bald. No resources, far from home in enemy territory. How did they survive, hold out, and eat?
