I'm the king of a major European kingdom in the 1500s and I receive a message from a distant kingdom. What methods of the time would be available to verify the authenticity of said message?

In the show Marco Polo many of the Mongolian actors wear earrings and even a few of the characters are featured wearing gauge type earrings(those earrings that punch a huge hole in the bottom of your ear). Was this accurate? Did jewelry play a big part in the fashion of the Mongolian empire?
