Roman soldiers are often depicted wearing sandal-like footwear. This seems very unsafe on a battlefield with heavy/sharp objects flying around/falling. Did they really wear sandals and If so, why not something offering more protection?

Were English knights in ancient times necessarily trained fighters, or were Knighthoods simply given to people who had served the crown/country in any capacity, like they are today? If not, when did Knights stop being professional fighters?
