Was depression and mental illness as prominent as it is in modern society back in ancient times? Are there any records of severe depression, schizophrenia, BPD, or any other mental illness that would suggest it was common hundreds and thousands of years ago?

[ELI5] I really don't understand the Vietnam war. I always thought it was a North VS. South type of war. I realized recently that wasn't the case. The viet cong were in the south and the NVA were in the north. Didn't the US fight against both of these guys? Can someone explain this war to me?
