The trapdoor to my basement is beneath the carpet in the livingroom, but since I live alone I don't really have any stuff I need to store down there.

I've discovered that sleeping with the door open isn't scary, because I sleep in the room of our house that connects to the stairs, laundry room, hallway, bathroom, and our parent's room, and most of those don't even have a door in the first place.
