Wikipedia on Ibn Khaldun has a short claim about him joining a subversive society called "Rijal Hawa Rijal". Searching for further (English) references only seems to turn up many exact quotations of this sentence. Can anyone provide insight to this group, and did Khaldun have a "subsersive" side?

The Ottoman Empire is often associated with Rome; the Safavid Empire, with Persia - the two empires which were Islam's primary enemies in the 7th century. Was there any contemporary reaction to this coincidence, by Islamic or Christian scholars, in the 16th century?
