Was there ever a "breakthrough" the trenches in World War One that just wasn't capitalized on quickly enough? Was there ever a point between 1915-1917 where soldiers cracked penetrated behind the trenches? (before the 1918 offensives and after the battle of the frontiers)

What were the military reputations of the smaller german states (aside from Prussia) from the 17th-19th centuries? Were any of the litany of smaller states known for having a strong military reputation?
