Lots of media depict Nazi officers as able to execute their subordinates on a whim, and no repercussions would happen. How true was this in real life, if at all?

World War 2, and its factions, are possibly one of the most extensively documented periods of history that we know of. I’m saying that, are there any major aspects and questions of WW2 that are still heavily debated or we have no concrete evidence to answer definitively?
