What happens in our head when we "zone out"? Why does our vision go blurry until we move our eyes again?

If you ran a pipe through the center of the Earth and made a noise into one end of it, how loud would the noise need to be in order for a person on the other end of the pipe to hear it? Would the change in air pressure as the sound moves through the pipe effect this at all?
