Where there any attempts at creating democratic societies before the modern era (excluding Athens, of course)? Did peasants ever rebelled in favor of a new democratic or semi-democratic form of government, including the right to vote extended to all people, regardless of class?

What happened to the great royal houses of Europe before the French revolution (the Bourbon, the Habsburg, etc.)? Did they simply lose their land or stopped existing altogether? Are there any modern-day members of these dynasties?
