In 1856, Richard Francis Burton briefly mentions a Somali "superstition" that mosquito bites are linked to Malaria, which was of course borne out as correct 50 years later. With the growing emphasis on non-European knowledge and sources, are there other instances of this phenomenon that we know of?

In the 18th century, there was a great deal of talk around "gradual emancipation" of slaves, under the belief that a suddenly unmoored uneducated population of enslaved people might create social/economic problems. What did plans for "gradual emancipation" look like?

Pre-19th century, European medical practice could arguably be considered more of an art than a science. If I was a qualified physician, to what extent could I make my own decisions on treatment, and to what extent was I expected either by colleagues or the public, to conform with best practices?
