If carbon is the basic building block for life here on earth, could there possibly be other building blocks for other forms of life that we are not aware of? If so then what other elements could harness the potential to create such a complex thing as life?

This is a kinda silly question but when warming food in a microwave, what keeps plates, napkins and other common items that we put in there from becoming the same temp as our food and potentially burning up?
