I was watching a documentary about U.S. National Parks and many people from the 1800's keep referring to Niagara Falls as an "embarrassment". Why is that?

I just found out that I'm going to be teaching Texas history which I am somewhat ignorant on (yay school system). I really need some resources/books/etc to better understand the material so my students can get something better than usual.
