The Roman concept of 'Dignitas' lacks a direct translation to English and the meaning of it was seemingly different to all who strove for it and in different eras. Combining all those who mentioned, discussed and aimed for it, is there any equivalent modern ideal at any stage of the ideas evolution?

Quoting films and books that are present in popular culture is extremely prevalent day to day in current society. Was there an equivalent in civilizations, for example Greece or Rome, that did not have newspapers/books/literacy, such as quoting ruler's edicts or popular orators?
