I recall hearing there's a theory that the Viking attack on Lindisfarne was an act of revenge for the cutting of a sacred (pagan) oak in northern Germany. Is this true? If so, the Vikings must have sent scouts to Lindisfarne prior to the attack. Did they do this before raiding monasteries?
