How did trench warfare develop during WWI? Did troops take standard formations, then start digging when they met a MG, and later connect up their holes to form a trench?

I’ve heard that during the Cold War the US had 32 “broken arrows,” or lost nuclear weapons. However, I can’t find any information on how many the USSR/Russia lost. How many nuclear weapons did they lose, or what is the best estimate?

I have heard multiple times that German trenches were higher quality and had better living conditions during WWI. Why did British and French trenches match them later in the war?

During WWI, allied and central powers were both infringing on US right to freely trade and travel the seas. However, the US only really went after Germany for their infringement. Why did they not care (as much) about British and French infringements?

We often hear about German U-boats involvement in WWI, but what about entente submarines? Were they effective? Did they make a significant impact on naval warfare? Why don’t we hear about them much today?
