In the concentration camp Ausschwitz, there is the sentence 'Arbeit macht frei' (Work sets free) written above the gate. What was the intention behind this? To fool newcoming prisoners?

I heard many people say, that in the 2nd World War, the Axis might have won the war against Soviet Russia, if Japan would have attacked from the east (manchuria for example). Would that even be possible despite the harsh siberien winter? And wouldnt there also be problems with supply lines?
