The architecture of old Europe (say about 1600 to 1900) seems much more ornate than current architecture. How did the authorities back then finance such elaborate undertakings, and did it cause financial or economic issues? Or was it not especially expensive in the first place?

Was there a significant base of support for the South Vietnamese government among it's citizenry or the citizenry of the North, and if so, did they ever hold a majority in either group? Furthermore, under what pretext did those Vietnamese citizens who supported it do so? What arguments were made?

What was life like for the Soviet bureaucracy and politicians, materially speaking? What did they get in terms of the quality and scale of goods, housing, privileges, and their power and comfort in their day-to-day life, in comparison with an average Soviet civilian?

It seems to me that Stalin was incredibly conciliatory to Hitler prior to June 1941 and thus bears some responsibility for Hitler’s rise, yet I don’t hear much discussion of this perspective; do historians concur with my view, or am I way off?
