Does this position of soldiers make sense? Screenshot is from Women at War (2022) Netflix series which takes time during I World War. They formed the defense line just below the hill while waiting for germans - isn't it against basic warfare rules?

Why B-29 Superfortress planes didn't bomb Iwo Jima or Saipan before ground invasion in 1944/1945?

Why is there a need for treaties like Geneva Conventions? I understand obvious reason to condemn killing civilians, but essentialy war is about killing so why it's bad to dispose of war prisoners, use chemical weapons on military targets or shoot with fragmenting bullets?
