Why do signs with city and town names in Europe have a slash through them? I noticed this in most countries I’ve backpacked in. I read somewhere that it was a tactic used to confuse the Nazis in WWII but idk if it’s true. So if anyone knows please share

Why in Europe do signs with city names have a slash through them. I noticed this while backpacking around and it’s in most countries I have seen. I think I read somewhere that it was a tactic done in WWII to confuse the Nazis but I don’t know how true that is. If anyone knows the reason please share
