Why is it that when you stare into space in a dark room your vision slowly fades into greyness?

How come when someone coughs in class, many other people in the room cough shortly afterward, creating a small chain reaction? Is this something we do subconsciously or something else?

Say you had to program a robot to navigate a maze, and it could only sense when it ran into walls, in order to stop and move in a different direction. With the ability to select motions at random, would it be more effective to allow only random left and right turns, or left, right, and 180° turns?
