In Godfather (1972) Don Corleone says that if their family starts getting involved with drugs they will lose all their connections to legitimate people like police and senators. Did this prophecy come true? Also, were there people that really believed this in the late 1940's?

TIL that the Triads originate from the Tiandihui, a secret organization aimed at fighting the Qing dynasty. I want to know if the overseas gangs, in Singapore or the United States, were still concerned about the rule of the Qing. I especially am wondering if they still wore the queue when overseas.
