In Hollywood films from the 40s and 50s (Gentlemen Prefer Blondes), TV shows (I Love Lucy) and modern pastiche of the time period (Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom), we see nightclub scenes with elaborate stage shows, intricate choreography, sets, and costuming. Was this at all common?

How did the concepts of official power in Ancient Rome (imperium, auctoritas, and potestas) actually work? What powers did they bestow? Who granted them? And was there an official list somewhere detailing who had these powers, or was it more of a matter of convention and custom?
