What were the most widespread names in Europe before the rise of Christianity?

The force Britain sent in 1914 was outnumbered by the Germans that met it, so the British retreated with the French and there was a race to coast. Why didn't Britain, having sent such small support, ship troops over to the coast? Could the Royal Navy not at the Empire's peak protect a crossing?
