Early animation had a lot of "adult" subjects on it - references to/depections of suicide, alcoholism, stripping/burlesque, stuff like that. How did animation go from that to a medium that was aimed almost entirely at children?

Sometimes my computer freezes for a bit, I enter some inputs before realizing what's going on, then when it unfreezes it does all of my inputs at once super-fast. What was going on that it wasn't able to do any updates to my environment but was still saving all my commands/mouse movements?
