In "Braveheart", King Edward Longshanks orders his archers to fire on soldiers who are engaged in hand to hand combat on the battlefield, in the knowledge that they will hit his own men. Are there any historical examples of something like this ever happening?

In "The Irishman" (set from 1940s-70s), some of the Mafia members are shown speaking fluent Italian throughout the movie. Is this realistic? Was Italian commonly passed on to American-born children around this time?
