As a child, when I had a flesh wound to be treated with alcohol, I was told "If it hurts, that means it's working!". Is this accurate - does the purification of malicious "germs" cause pain - or would it hurt, regardless?

Apparently people in Japanese / Asian cultures clean their ears more than those in American / Western cultures. From a health standpoint, should you clean your ears regularly with a pick/q- tip?

How is it that, seemingly every year, despite all of my human resistances and antibodies, I am afflicted by a somewhat debilitating cold/flu/bug, yet my dog here of over 14 years has not so much as uttered a single cough or sneeze throughout?
