In terms of evolution, what was the benefit of pain-recognition, or even broader, the sense of touch? Why did those with this sense eventually "take over" the other ones without?

Today, while watching a movie on a new TV, the movie looked like a home video, too real, if you know what I mean. Why did this happen? I'm not sure exactly what about it caused it, but yeah.
