Why does it get colder in higher elevations? Should it be warmer because heat rises? The attic in my house is hot as hell, but the Rocky Mountains have snow on top.

Consider two motorcycles, one with normal wheels and one with tiny wheels, just three inches in diameter. At the same speed, would the one with the smaller wheels be harder to balance?

If I walk somewhere, I expend X calories to go Y miles. If I bike somewhere, I can expend the same X calories, but go 2-3Y miles. I know this intuitively, but I don't know why it is so. Where does the extra energy come from?

After I eat a calorie, how long until that calorie can contribute meaningfully to my activity? Consider, people who eat a meal before working out 15 minutes later -- have those calories actually been metabolized to any practical extent, in terms of providing energy for activity?
