I've often heard of young Haredim males studying the Torah, Talmud and scriptures. Is this study an activity that can be called academic? Like a historian would study a particular region/period/people?

Many images of The Great Depression show men in suits and hats up and about. Was wearing a suit when you were out much more prevalent during that area? What changed to reduce it's wear?
