There was a lot of Western concern during the breakup of the Soviet Union that nuclear weapons had gone missing, and could wind up in the hands of criminals or terrorists. Was there any solid basis for this, or was it just fearmongering?

The Earth's gravity is strong enough to keep orbiting spaceships/stations from flying off into space, so why do people on board seem not to experience it? Shouldn't they be drawn down towards the Earth-side of the spacecraft?
