According to Wikipedia, Katherine Stieglitz was institutionalized for postpartum depression in 1923 at age 25, and remained until her death in 1971. Before Reagan, did American mental health patients often remain institutionalized for decades? Who paid? Was postpartum depression actually recognized?

E.g, “My beliefs may be unpopular now, but history will vindicate me,” or “Future generations won't believe we did X.” Did older societies discuss social issues this way, or is this lens/rhetorical device uniquely modern?
