In Asimov's sci-fi story "Waterclap", one of the characters claims that William Beebe, who built the first deep-sea chamber, wanted to make it a cylinder, but was convinced to make it a sphere by FDR. I know that the plan changed from cylinder to sphere, but was FDR really involved?
