How do general living standards (availability of food, money, physical health, Education, ect) in china and Japan compare in 1707 (long before the Meiji Restoration) and in 1907 (a couple generations after the Meiji Restoration and half a decade before the end of the Chinese empire)?

A grand parent once told me schools had to hire a lot of women and bring retired teachers in during the war due to all the young male teachers being called up. Did universities have any problems keeping courses going when proffessors were called up?

I listened to a history Podcast that said in the late 1060s the North Of England experienced a famine because the Normans deliberately destroyed people's crops and livestock. Is that accurate? If "yes" how much of the country was effected?

my high school English teacher once told me Prospero just throws his spell books in the sea, rather than burning them, because people in the 1600s thought books so valuable the idea of destroying them would have scandalized Shakespeare's audience.Did people back then really view books so reverently?
