suppose I live in bithynia or Pontus (anatolia) in 77BC, would I be aware that the Hittite empire had existed on my home land a millennium before? if "yes" would I likely have any pride in the ethnic connection to it?

I visited an old church today, I asked a tour guide what the oldest thing there was. He told me that the font probably dated back to the crusades because it had carvings of elephants & lions on it (IE animals not many English would have seen in the flesh before then). Does that reasoning make sense?
