In pre-Industrial cities, what happened when the sun set? For example, was Rome a city that "never slept," or were the streets extensively lit by lamplight where business went on as usual?

Reading a collection of short stories by Pushkin. In almost all of them, a lady faints, or a traveler suddenly falls ill. Generally, their health is very flimsy, especially in light of emotional distress. How accurate is this? Are the authors exaggerating for dramatic effect?
