In one episode of Call the Midwife, set in 1950s England, one of the elder nun-midwives claims that "in the old days, treatment for an infant with Spina Bifida was chloral hydrate... Let the child pass peacefully." Is it true that medical personnel used to euthanize infants with such conditions?

When I think of naval battles, I think of big ships firing broadsides with cannons. But babies have existed long before gunpowder was discovered. What, exactly, would a large naval battle look like without cannons?
