Why does time run slower when you are deeper in a gravitational field as opposed to higher? Like being in a subterranean mine, opposed to being in orbit.

If a metal structure in the vacuum of space was partially destroyed from a super hot local explosion, would the damaged metal edges glow/emit light from the increase in temperature? Or would they cool very quickly and not glow, because space is so cold?
