I'm looking to create a custom version of Work Sans. Ideally I'd like to reduce the word spacing and set a variable weight as default, as well as some of the open type stylistic alts. Is all this possible in a font editor? Any pointers would be appreciated

Something I notice with digital fonts (especially at small sizes) is a kind of quality of texture that is hard to put my finger on, is this the hinting that I am noticing?
