In a lot (if not all) of media relating to D-Day, all the soldiers are wearing nets on their helmets. What's up with that? Is there a specific reason for that or were the helmets just made like that and why?

Would civilians from 1915 to 1918 with no connection to soldiers in the trenches (like the only news they got of the war was newspapers, no letters from the front from a relative, friend, or relative or friend of a friend or relative) have been aware of Flanders poppies during the war?
