How did people back then just abandoned Norse and Greek beliefs? Did they just one day decide their Gods weren't real anymore?

People in the 1920's (America especially) had a very unique speech style/pattern. What prompted this in the first place? And how and did it come to change overtime to become the speech style we use today?
