Looking over E. Behm's "Geographisches Jahrbuch" series starting from the mid-late 1800s, there is always a mention of the Ainu (or Aino in German) whenever the topic of Japan arose in a lot of the books (if not all). How well known were the Ainu to the world, to Koreans, to Chinese, to Russians...?

Why wouldn't sword designs be similar or consistent across the Eurasian continent, for example katana, longswords, scimitars, etc.? Were different materials available in different areas therefore encouraged certain designs in those areas? Did human physiological differences play any part?
