My lovely dirt and log staircase is eroding after many decades. I'm looking to rebuild it with a similar aesthetic. Is there any way I can improve on the design? Should I add gravel or stone to make it less slippery when wet?

These exterior steps at my cabin are many decades old and are starting to deteriorate. Would it be worth paying a professional to rebuild them, or should I tackle it myself? I'm very handy, but busy with family life, so time is valuable.
