#OTD 5 August 1912 Henri Marie Joseph Grouès (later known as Abbé Pierre) was born. He became a Catholic priest, member of the Resistance during WW2, & deputy of the Popular Republican Movement (MRP). In 1949, he founded the Emmaus movement, to help the poor, homeless & refugees.

#OTD 2 August 1646 Jean-Baptiste du Casse was born. He became a legendary privateer, then admiral who served in several key naval battles, including the Battle of Málaga & the siege of Barcelona. In the midst of these wars, he was Governor of Saint-Domingue from 1691 to 1703.

#OTD 4 August 1693, according to tradition Dom Perignon invented champagne; it is not clear whether he actually invented champagne, however he has been credited as an innovator who developed the techniques used to perfect sparkling wine.
